We are creating living and learning opportunities which contribute to the health and wellbeing for planet and people.
December 2023
It has been a year full of regenerative culture-building activities here at Provision. The smallholding and learning center were, at times, quite (over)crowded with visitors… we found room in our hearts and Provision Guest Houses for all of them, except… the Slugs. For the first time this year, the harvest was literally decimated by these unwelcome guests, who may be visible signs of a changing climate, as they were here for the first time this year, after an uncharacteristically warm winter….
However, within a context of mounting war and climate catastrophe, we did have the great fortune to welcome many souls attempting to find more helpful, restorative pathways, including the new friends we hosted from Auroville in India on their travels overland on the “Green Silk Road.” We also welcomed 20+ people from the UK and beyond through an Erasmus+ event with our partners from Giraffe Social Enterprises. The annual “Tabără de Communicare Nonviolentă” (NVC summer camp) was an enormous success pulling 22 participants from all over Romania and the Republic of Moldova. We had two equinox (spring and fall) community events with the NVC community of Cluj and our Hazel Village community here in Alunisu in which we performed miracles in the Provision schoolhouse courtyard.
We supported many amazing journeys through various European mycelial networks. All of this while continuing to create new connections and strengthen established relationships within Hazel Village (our name for the village-within-the-village of Alunisu/Magyarokereke). We hope that you can catch the sense of enthusiasm, diligence, dedication and gratitude that we experience as you read this account of the year 2023 at Provision Transylvania.

At the end of this newsletter we are looking ahead to some events of 2024. We are delighted that our dear friend and virtuoso musician Tcha Limberger will give a 5 day workshop in August and that we are co-organising a 9 day international intensive training (IIT) in NonViolent Communication (NVC) in our own community in July. Check this out and come join us!
Thank you for joining us on this journey!

The Farm
When we think back of our farming of this year, two things pop in mind immediately:
slugs and hay!
Two years ago a few slugs showed up (they call them ‘Spanish slugs’ here, the orange kind), last year we noticed an increase and this year we experienced a true plague. The slugs basically ate everything. No seedling was safe. Except onions and leeks. We have heard similar stories all over Transylvania (and far beyond, even a personal story of a CSA farmer in Prague). Why are the slugs all of a sudden exploding in such large numbers? One shared theory is that the winters are not cold enough to freeze the eggs which are deposited in the soil. Is this one of the signs of climate change? Is this one of the symptoms of disrupted ecosystems which make growing food extremely challenging in the near future? How worried should we be? We did our utmost to deal with this symptom by luring the slugs to little heaps of bran (which they love even better than tender lettuce seedlings) and collect them, by the hundreds, every evening. We persisted and still we lost. What is the root cause of this symptom that needs attention?

And hay. We again made a lot of hay for our herd of 10 goats and Dutsu, our dear draft horse. This year we had amazing help with over 30 people volunteering during different haying sessions all summer long. It remains such a joy to work, sweat and harvest together with a group of people, out in the summer fields, preparing the winter food for the animals that sustain our farm and being.
Big thanks to all!
Although the wolves took their share of 3 little goats this summer, our heard is healthy and thriving, providing us with plenty food and joy.

The Green Silk Road
We all found it a great joy and honour that the 2023 Green Silk Road came through our region! Alex, Gijs, Vikram, Pragnya, Pema, and Sijmen have been traveling from Auroville in India OVER LAND (as much as possible) to Western Europe. They arrived by train to Huedin physically tired but spiritually awake and for the (too few!) days that they were here, we found an easy and respectful, direct and naturally collaborative way of planning and making decisions together. This, for me, was regenerating my hope that this kind of togetherness is, indeed, possible.
They left us much in the way of inspiration, real contribution in terms of Provision Schoolhouse repairs and warm memories. They also gave a presentation of their lives in Auroville to the school community of Sancraiu.
We hear rumours that there is a new crew taking up the work again this coming season. Perhaps there will be another chapter to this continuing storytelling adventure, perhaps one that may be open for more people in this region and beyond to join… We will keep you posted through Provision’s event pages on our website if the Green Silk Road leads to Alunisu again in July 2024!

And by watching their video here below
Provision is grateful to be part of the many pearls (regenerative projects) on the Green Silk Road chain that are being woven together and might be used by many travellers to come. It highlights the fact that we are not alone in our work and that everywhere beautiful people and projects are working on a more inclusive, just and climate friendly future.

Returnings – An Erasmus+ project
It was a long and winding road… towards the main mobility of an Erasmus project between Giraffe Social Enterprises in the UK and Provision Transylvania which brought, ultimately, 20+ souls from the UK and beyond to the lands of Provision and Hazel Village. We began in 2019 (pre-pandemic and pre-brexit) and weathered all of these, quietly awaiting the time when we might come together in the name of
regenerative culture-building, village-mindedness and restorative systems building.
Many thanks to all who helped this event to take place. It provided much-appreciated inspiration to improve Provision’s infrastructure to create 10 new sleeping places out of antique traditional beds made in the village which we repaired and painted. We were also able to clean the schoolhouse outbuildings to create a new group space which has continued to serve as a meeting place, dining hall and workshop space for various events since….

We have been building bridges, literally across the creek that flows in between Provision grounds, by felling a large acacia tree that had died and using it’s water resistent trunk as bridge building material. We have also built bridges between generations amongst the carefully selected participants, the youngsters and the elders and the worldview, wisdom and perceptions each of them harbours. And last but not least we have built bridges between the undesired challenging state in current global affairs, may it be environmental, social or economic, and the desired future we would like to live in.
One of the aims of this project has been to support the younger generation to find their path into participating into regeneration, by offering them a village lived, intergenerational living experience. May we have succeeded!
Some of the participants were experts in biodiversity assessment and started an in-depth survey on the extremely high biodiversity around our village. This valuable research will be used by us (mainly through our sister NGO ALPA) to showcase the importance of caring for the rich and also fragile species rich meadows and fields in our region. There are plans to continue this research next summer.

Dominic Barter – Restorative Systems
After the Erasmus project which brought Dominic Barter to Provision, we, along with our neighbor Monica Barbovschi, organised an event for him to share some of the ideas from his work around the world.
Over the last 28 years, Dominic and his colleagues in Brazil have been developing successful new ways of arriving at liberatory ends through liberatory means. Guided by the work of Marshall Rosenberg their dialogical social systems have been applied in contexts from gang-controlled favela shanty towns to family businesses, in contexts as diverse as civil wars, school systems, environmental disasters, online communities, churches and government and have inspired and supported programs in over 50 countries.
A number of people from our village, our region and the national Romanian NonViolent Communication community were able to join us for the weekend workshop offered here, and the feedback has been very positive… There have already been a number of requests for Dominic to return as what he shared has been deeply meaningful and helpful for strengthening our systems for supporting one another at these different levels.

In this short video Dominic tells about the impactful work he is doing in resolving conflict through restorative justice.
NonViolent Communication Camp
This year’s version of the “Tabără de Communicare Nonviolentă” (NVC camp) felt, again, as if we had made another quantum leap into the more beautiful world that we know in our hearts is possible. Along with community organiser and motivator Alexandru Moldovan, Provision has been hosting some version of this camp since around 2018…
4 days, 4 trainers, 16 workshops, 22 participants, daily delicious vegan meals, countless meaningful encounters
The camps have become so well-attended that other organisers beside Alexandru were called in. In the last two years, Stefana Forgatiu has served in this role, and this year she was also offering several trainings as well. This year we also had the pleasure of inviting Ian Peatey, who has recently stepped into an extra official role within the global organisation (The Center for Nonviolent Communication) not only as certified trainer, but also as Assessor.
This brought our training team to Five, including Lars, who for the past several years has been bringing the agroecological perspective to the camp, giving walking tours of the area and teaching nonviolence in terms of bread labor: work that we do with our own hands to contribute to our wellbeing subsistence needs in terms of food, clothing and shelter. It has become a tradition that we offer some time toward doing this kind of work/play together and the feedback we receive is that this is an amazing, somewhat magical process that allows deeper integration of the learning.
Next year’s NVC efforts in this region will be focused upon the upcoming International Intensive Training IIT which we are co-organising in our neighboring village of Sancraiu…
If you are at all interested in attending this event, we encourage you to Pre-Register ASAP, as places for this event are also limited. And, though the asking price for this event is steep, we also encourage you to ask for financial assistance if needed! We will be meeting in January to begin deciding about these matters, so please do not hesitate to ask for what you need, as it is our intention to make sure that places are given for those who are motivated to learn NVC and to have the kind of “village within a village” experience we have been cultivating together over the last many years.
The Old Barn …
Once upon a time, long time ago a peasant built a barn and used it for his animals and hay storage. Nobody alive at this moment could remember when it was built. It was old. And it had been neglected for too long. So, it needed to be taken down. And, it was situated in the garden of the Provision school house. With the inspiration of Alexandru Moldovan, who mobilised a group of extremely motivated volunteers from the Cluj NVC community, combined with friends and neighbours of ours, we organised one weekend in October for the demolishment of this peasant monument.
Everything and all elements seemed to work with us and within a day and a half, the barn was down and everything was cleaned up, pure magic!: all the good wood safely stored, all the rest cut for firewood after thousands (!) of nails were removed by pure endurance and pride of an incredible team. Robyn had fantastic help in the kitchen to feed the hungry workers with delicious wholesome food. Saturday evening was celebrated with bonfire at a place where once there used to be a barn…

Alunisu Village Community
Every year brings some changes to the newcomer “village within a village” community here in Hazel Village, and this year brought a wave of wonderful connections:
For the first time, Monica Barbovschi, who bought her house years ago and has been renovating it ever since, spent several weeks/months in the village before going again back to the city for the winter, as the insulation work is not yet complete and heating during the cold winter months is, therefore, not so easily accomplished!
Our long-time friends Sara and Douglas and their organisation Tarnat Kalotoszeg Durabil were able to buy an extra piece of farmland that they hope will continue their efforts toward contributing toward an agroecological vision in the region, raising community awareness, and contributing toward more group events in this village.
They have new neighbors, George Somlea and his wife Corina, who have bought the piece of land that Jonas began developing but decided not to continue and to pursue his project instead in Petrenzel / Kis Petri instead. George’s dream is to build a house there and join a community that he hopes will offer his grandchildren some small taste of what he himself experienced as a child spending time at his grandparents smallholding. George and Corina have been attending Provision’s yearly NVC camps now for several years, which is how they found out about this village and we are glad that we can now welcome them into the community.
This year we (finally!) met our neighbors of two years already, Ilinka and Adrian. They both work online and enjoy walking their dogs in the hills outside the village and are extremely grateful for the possibility for connection both with nature and with human community that this village offers them. We have enjoyed their presence at many village events including the event this fall when we took down the barn in the schoolhouse. We are very happy to find common ground here with both of them!!
And last but certainly not least, we would like to welcome our long-time friend and former Provision volunteer/intern Máté Borda. Máté has been a peripheral member of our village community since 2015 when he arrived here as one of the first long-term volunteers we ever had. And he has been coming to visit almost every year since, making many friends in the village, and recently bringing groups of friends also to the dance camp in Sancraiu / Szentkirály. This last summer, he felt strongly moved to buy a house here in the village. He had long thought about it, and this was the moment – and there was a house for sale! We are so excited for the time, after some initial renovations, when Máté will hopefully be able to join us here on a more regular basis!

ALPA – Land for Life
ALPA – the ‘access to land for agroecology’ organisation that Lars co-founded and is running together with friend and neighbor Attila Szocs is doing well and going through a rebirth.
ALPA’s mission is to secure agricultural lands with the purpose to direct them towards Agroecological farmers and biodiversity conservation. Because our region is home to some of Europe’s highest biodiversity, a natural treasure of immense importance to both the local and the global level, it can serve as a blue print towards the transition to a climate and people friendly planet.
We are members of the European Access to Land Network and the Agroecology Europe Association and momentarily sponsored by family foundations and private donors.
For more information on our work and how also you can join, see: www.alpa.land
This summer the first 1,5 hectares was donated to us!
A Dutch film team is making a documentary about ALPA.
The documentary (filmed and produced by Jeppe van Pruissen and Joris van Egmond) will address the problems with agriculuture, lands and nature that we see and address, the solutions we offer and the way we see the future. We are looking forward to be able to show it to you sometime in 2024!

Drinkable Rivers
Some of you might remember our dear friend Li An Phoa, with whom we organised the fun and to the point workshop ‘Deal With Your Shit’ in summer 2019. Since then Li An has been working very deliberately on her organisation, Drinkable Rivers. Li An walks along rivers, often from ‘source to sea’ in order to raise awareness of the question:
“why is the water in this river not drinkable?”
Everything seems to be connected to this simple question! She engages citizens, school youth, municipalities, NGOs, factory owners, rangers, and more. She helps to start citizen-led movements in different river families (do you know to which ‘river family’ you belong?) to work towards a future with clean and drinkable rivers. We find it a profoundly beautiful mission!
This autumn Li An, together with her partner Maarten, walked the river Thames in the UK from source to sea. Many people joined them for one or more days and so did Provision (Lars and Carsten). Together with a group of 8 we witnessed the river entering London, measured water qualities, listened to Li An’s stories about the 3 weeks they were already walking, and imagined the days this ancient river had still been drinkable. How long ago was that? Will it ever return to that state? You can read here their blog about the River Thames Walk.
Li An and Maarten’s book ‘Drinkable Rivers’ is now also available in English! An incredible read of a beautiful and deeply meaningful story; Provision gives a huge recommendation!

Planet Local Summit
When we moved to Alunisu, the small Transylvanian village where we live since 2009 and where we created Provision, we had been inspired by several people and projects to chose an alternative way of living, embracing the connection with the land, food, tradition, indigenous wisdom and simplicity.
One of the persons and stories that was part of this inspiration is Helena Norberg-Hodge and her book “Ancient Futures” in which she writes about the Ladakhi Culture in Northern India and how the machine of globalization destroyed local traditions, cultures, family structures, livelihoods, small businesses and small farms. Helena’s awareness raising work grew into a global movement called Local Futures. This September the first global summit of the movement was held in Bristol. Lars was invited as a speaker at the summit and presented the work of Provision and ALPA.
Lars and Carsten both went and made friends with the most amazing people, besides Helena also Bayo Akomolafe, Iain McGilchrist, John Perkins, Lyla June Johnston, Charles Eisenstein, Daniel Christian Wahl, Rob Hopkins and reconnected with our dear friend Satish Kumar, who visited us at Provision in 2018.
You can read here more about the Lokal Future movement and also find the recordings of this nourishing summit.
We are very happy to be, at last, connected with the Local Futures movement, as we feel that Provision fits very well in this global tapestry of localising projects.

Agroecology Europe
Agroecology is a practice, a science and a movement
Provision has been a case study in AgroEcology for Europe (AE4EU), a European Horizon project that was running over the last 3 years. AE4EU mapped local-, regional-, and national level innovations and initiatives (like Provision) in various European countries, providing an inclusive and precise overview of agroecology. It recognises that agroecology is emerging as a pathway for the development of sustainable agricultural and food systems in Europe, however that the full implementation is still limited.
In November the AgroEcology Europe Association organised it’s fourth European forum, this time in Hungary. Lars was invited to present Provision and connected and engaged with many active agroecology enthusiasts, farmers, academics, policy makers and activists. You can find out more about the Agroecology Europe Association here.
Events in 2024
The Tcha Sessions
Tcha playing at Provision, August 2023
For information about the workshop and registration, please follow this link to the event page on Tcha’s website.
We are very pleased to announce that virtuoso musician Tcha Limberger will give a 5 day workshop at Provision 6 – 11 August, 2024.
We met Tcha the very first time we set foot in the village that Provision now calls home… At that moment Tcha was living in this enchanting place. Friendship grew instantly and soon we became neighbors. Tcha’s path in life took him elsewhere and over the years his property came more and more into the stewardship of Provision. Now, we are delighted to announce that a long-standing dream of both Tcha and Provision is coming into reality: a music workshop with Tcha in this beloved Transylvanian village.
9 day international intensive training in nonviolent communication

We are very pleased to announce that Provision is co-organisor for a 9 day international intensive training (IIT) in Nonviolent Communication (NVC) July 4th till July 13th, 2024.
The IIT will be held in our own village community, which is a rarity for such a global event.
And…. Robyn will be a trainer together with the amazing team of Roxy Manning, Frank Gaschler, Simran Wester and Reena Ginwala!
Please find all information about this training on the website of the Center for Nonviolent Communication.
And see the video below in which Carsten presents the venue space: the village of Sancraiu!

Green Silk Road Summer School
We are in the process of exploring and planning a collaboration with the Green Silk Road team to host a ten day Summer School.
The Summer School will include topics like understanding collapse and system breakdown, lessons learned from ‘on the ground alternatives’, transformation and metamorphosis, setting up mutual aid systems and relating with the more than human world.
The GSR approach to learning aims to involve all of ourselves: head, heart and hands. Just like travelling to the site, the act of living together on site is as much part of the curriculum as the reading and writing.
Tentative dates: 20 – 30 July, 2024
In case you are interested, please let us know, so we can keep you updated.
