Self-sufficiency

“ Self-sufficiency does not mean ‘going back’ to the acceptance of a lower standard of living. On the contrary, it is the striving for a higher standard of living; for food that is fresh and organically grown and good; for the good life in pleasant surroundings; for the health of body and peace of mind that come with hard, varied work in the open air; and for the satisfaction that comes from doing difficult and intricate jobs well and successfully”. John Seymour in ‘the Self-sufficient life and how to live it’

 Subsistence farming

“ Two thirds of the agricultural holdings in Romania produce mainly for own consumption” Eurostat, European Commission

 Self-reliance

“I am learning that if I just go on accepting the framework for life that others have given me, if I fail to make my own choices, the reason for my life will be missing. I will be unable to recognize that which I have the power to change. Liv Ullmann

 Sustainability

“While a virtual sustainability is suggested, real sustainability deteriorates: ways of attaining the latter become lost, as well as the knowledge of how to achieve this. Any motivation to improve real sustainability is taken away, if not criminalized.” Jan Douwe van der Ploeg in ‘The New Peasantries’.

 Simplicity

“That everyone in this world should be able to maintain as high a standard of life as possible with the best possible output of labour is just as fantastic as to expect a camel to pass through the eye of a needle…” Mahatma Gandhi in ‘The mind of Mahatma Gandhi’.

"The time I spent at Provision was one of the most inspiring experiences of my life. It wasn't only the many different things we learned; the setting was equally inspiring. I hadn't realised before that the lifestyle of self-sufficient peasant farming was still lived in the present day in Transylvania, as it was for hundreds of years throughout Europe. For me, as a heritage specialist, the interwoven and complete complex of material and immaterial heritage was overwhelming. Not to mention the awe-inspiring landscape - I'll never forget the wildflowers in the mountains."                                 Geertje Korf, The Netherlands
